Please let me clarify something relating to the first part of this post.
I spoke at some length about the idea of
social media and its relationship to the concept of friendship.

Let me go a bit further. I was referring SPECIFICALLY to people who fall PREY to the unscrupulous bastards who offer this
"BUY FOLLOWERS" CRAP.
"BUY FOLLOWERS" CRAP.
There are those, unfortunately many, who lack sufficient self-confidence to withstand these feeble marketing attempts to seduce and in a very mocking way it seems to me, they take advantage of people at their weakest point.
I detest that bullshit. I feel sorry for those whose idea of self-worth seems to get mixed up with the mistaken notion that you are only as valuable as the number of friends/followers you have and that just is NOT true. But, this is not the place nor time for an in-depth psychological discussion on self-worth. So suffice it to say, I abhor the preying on the vulnerable for the sake of mere profit and feel sorry for the victims of it.

NOW, there are those who go into social media BECAUSE they have an agenda. That is not necessarily a bad thing. They want to promote a business, or their talent whatever it may be. They are in the media, or entertainment, or politics. OR even a war-correspondent or twelve. LOL.
That is PERFECTLY legitimate AND it is also a far different aspect of social media because for THESE people, it is perfectly APPROPRIATE for them to seek to attract AS MANY FOLLOWERS-
'FRIENDS' as possible...cause for them primarily it is not about attracting friends on a personal basis or level. Everybody understands that. I understand that.
Rachel Maddow, Chris Hayes, Ken Keaton, et al. They are there to share their talent, their products-services/their points of view. Perfectly acceptable and no quibbling from me.

For Mustafa Kazemi for example to try to have a lot of followers so he has a base in which he can produce results for his journalistic efforts...
that is PERFECTLY understandable
AND appropriate.

HE NEEDS that and so do @GottaLaff, @JoyReid, @ASE, @Lizzwinstead, etc...all good professional people who are doing nothing more than using social media just as they would any other form of media such as television, radio, comedy clubs...to display their talents...etc.
THAT is FAR different though from the notion of buying followers which is a pretty shitty and empty way to get attention. Sad and shitty.
YES? I think so.
